Fosamax

Fosamax linked to femur fractures

If you are at risk of osteoporosis, or a loss of bone density, you will want a drug that makes your bone density stronger. Merck's drug Fosamax has been prescribed to osteoporosis patients, or those at risk, but the medication unfortunately may have the opposite effect. Fosamax has been linked to femur fractures, or fractures of the thighbone.

Merck denies any connection between Fosamax and femur fractures, but the Food and Drug Administration is conducting a safety review.

If you or someone you know is coping with Fosamax problems, contact a personal injury lawyer to learn about your rights. You may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and other losses. Call 1-800-877-4030 to speak with an experienced personal injury attorney about preparing a potential Fosamax lawsuit. Choose Tolbert Beadle & Musgrave, LLC. Let us fight for you.

What is Fosamax?

Fosamax (alendronate sodium) is part of a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. Fosamax is prescribed to postmenopausal women to slow the loss of bone mass, also known as osteoporosis.

Fosamax side effects

The side effects of Fosamax include two types of thigh fractures: subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femur fractures. These are described as low-energy fractures, which may be sustained in the standing position or from a low-impact fall. Researchers discovered the bone cracks in some patients who used bisphosphonates were in an unusual horizontal pattern. About 22 percent of the women who experienced femur fractures had used Fosamax for at least 7 years.

Fosamax effects or bisphosphonate side effects include fractures of the femur and osteonecrosis of the jaw (also known as "dead jaw syndrome").

Less serious side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Joint pain
