Definition: Dram shop

The term dram shop or dram shop case is another way of referring to a case involving the illegal supply of alcohol.

At one time in England, black market providers of alcohol who wished to avoid paying taxes on their merchandise sold alcohol by the dram (a unit of measurement). These establishments that provided alcohol illegally became known as dram shops for this reason. The name has continued in use mainly only as a legal term.
