Most people who go to the hospital expect to be healthier when they leave. Unfortunately, many people who took Visicol or OsmoPrep as a bowel prep for colonoscopies have suffered kidney damage. Both of these drugs, which are oral sodium phosphate (OSP) medications, have been linked to acute phosphate nephropathy, a serious kidney injury. In response to this potential danger, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered drug manufacturers to include warning labels on all oral sodium phosphate products.
Following this FDA warning, the C.B. Fleet Company issued a voluntary drug recall of its OSP products, including Fleet® Phospho-soda® and Fleet® Phospho-soda® EZ-Prep® Bowel Cleansing System.
At Tolbert Beadle & Musgrave LLC, we are committed to helping individuals throughout Springfield, and the surrounding Missouri area recover full and fair compensation for acute phosphate nephropathy. If you were severely injured after using any of the listed Fleet medications, or any other prescription oral sodium phosphate or similar over-the-counter OSP products, contact our firm online or call (417) 887-3010 to schedule your free initial consultation.
What Are the Symptoms of Acute Phosphate Nephropathy?
Acute phosphate nephropathy (APN) can result in a dangerous decrease in kidney function. One of the biggest dangers posed by APN is that most people are unaware of what is happening to their kidneys. In fact, the early stages of the injury may only be detected in blood tests that specifically measure kidney function. As a result, APN often goes undetected and frequently results in total renal failure or even death.
Symptoms to watch for include:
- Malaise / Lethargy
- Drowsiness
- Decreased amount of urine
- Swelling of the ankles, feet and legs
